Product Description: Artificial insemination (AI) has been used as a common breeding technique for the rapid dissemination of important genes to improve livestock quality. Therefore, semen from elite yak bulls of Arunachli yaks was collected and cryposerved in 0.5ml straws. The conception rate of 50-60% was acheived when this cryopreserved and thawed yak semen was used for artificial insemination in yak females on standing estrus or induced estrus. More than 100 yak calves have been produced using this technology. Therefore, its easy and effective technology for upgrade to yaks.

Frozen yak semen is not avialble in Indian market. The ICAR-NRC on Yak, Dirnag is the only organization producing and cryopreserving yak semen in India.

Yaks are reared in small pockets in high altitude areas of Western and Eastern Indian Himalayas. The same Yak bulls are repeatedly used for breeding by the yak herders, leading to inbreeding. Therefore, yak germplasm from different region/ location is required to maintain the genetic vigor and productivity of the herd.
